How Much Does a Handyman Cost?

Updated August 24, 2026 · every figure is cited to a public source below

Angi puts the cost to hire a handyman at $406 on average, with most projects between $164 and $648. Hourly rates run $50 to $150, though flat-fee pricing is common for well-defined tasks.[1]

Almost every handyman carries a minimum service fee covering the first hour, because a single small job still costs them the travel. That one fact explains most of the confusion about handyman pricing: a $75 job and a $150 job can cost the same to have done.[1]

The practical consequence is that handyman work rewards batching. Bundling several small tasks into one visit spreads the minimum fee and the travel across all of them.[1]

Hourly or flat fee — and when each is better

Well-defined tasks are usually quoted flat: mounting a television, swapping a faucet, patching a hole. Vague or investigative work — a leak of unknown origin, a door that has never closed right — is usually hourly, because nobody can price the unknown honestly.[1]

Be wary of a flat fee for a job nobody has looked at. A firm price on an undiagnosed problem is either padded to cover the worst case, or about to become a change order.

  • Ask what the minimum call-out covers — usually the first hour, sometimes travel on top.[1]
  • Batch small jobs into one visit; the minimum fee is charged once.[1]
  • Ask whether materials are included or billed on top, and who buys them.

When a handyman is the wrong call

Handyman work is the general-purpose end of the trades, and the boundary matters. Electrical, plumbing and gas work is licensed in most states above a fairly low threshold, and using an unlicensed person on it can void insurance as well as breaking the rule.

Anything structural, anything behind a permit, and anything that will be inspected belongs with a licensed trade. If a job needs a permit, ask who is pulling it before work starts.

Common questions

Why did a ten-minute job cost $150?

Most handymen charge a minimum service fee covering the first hour, which pays for travel and scheduling. The fix for this is batching — line up several small jobs for one visit.

Is an independent cheaper than a franchise?

Generally yes. Angi notes independent handymen charge lower rates while companies and franchises cost more, carrying overhead and insurance. What you are buying at the higher price is usually insurance, scheduling and a warranty.

Does a handyman need a licence?

It depends on your state and the work. Many states set a dollar threshold above which a contractor licence is required, and licensed trades are mandatory for most electrical, plumbing and gas work regardless of price. Check with your state board before hiring for anything on that list.
